YellowJacket Press

You may be wondering about our annual contests. We've placed our regular publications on hiatus this year because we are putting together a stunning 10-year anniversary anthology. Stay tuned for when regular activities will resume, and look out for the debut of the  anthology this fall.

Dear Poetry Friends: the YJP Chapbook Contest is on hiatus until 2017 while the editor obtains her long-delayed MFA. We look forward to restarting the contest with a renewed, deepened mission.

We are proud to announce the publication of Pink Streets by Helen Pruitt Wallace, the current Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg. Helen is the 2016 recipient of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance SunLit Award. Her first collection of poems, Shimming the Glass House won the Richard Snyder Prize for Poetry and a bronze Florida Book Award.  She received a McKay Shaw Academy of American Poets Award, The dA Center for the Arts Poetry Award, a residency fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and a Tennessee Williams Scholarship from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She earned her Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing from Florida State University, and teaches poetry and nonfiction at Eckerd College. She and her husband Peter both grew up in St. Petersburg.

Yes, we finally have a winner of the YellowJacket Press Chapbook Contest for Florida Poets. Drum roll, please!

BIG congrats go to Wendy Buffington for her evocative and gorgeously crafted manuscript Looking for Water. The book will debut this fall, just in time for our 10th Anniversary celebrations. All contest submissions are judged anonymously, so it was a real delight to find out that our winner is already a big YJP fan. Welcome to the club, Wendy!

We also want to give a shout out to our four poetry-fabulous finalists--if we could have published you all we would have: Stephen Lindow, Zan Gay, Linda Alexander-Rosas, and Brad Morewood. Way to go, y'all. Good work all around!

Stay tuned dear readers. More YJP joy is on the way!

Dear Friends and Poetry-Lovers,

I'm writing to share some poetry-love and invite you to be part of one of Florida’s biggest literary celebrations ever. YellowJacket Press (YJP) is a non-profit, all-volunteer, independent poetry publisher located in Tampa, Florida.  Since 2005, our literary labor of love has published 30 poetry chapbooks, small collections of poetry by a single poet such as  Michael Hettich (Miami), Heather Sellers (Tampa), Susan Lilley (Orlando) and Jesse Millner (Ft. Myers).  We have published chapbooks by three Florida regional Poets Laureate: Mary Jane Ryals (Big Bend), Peter Meinke (St. Petersburg) and James Tokley (Hillsborough County). We’ve published poets from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, Miami to St. Cloud.  You could say YJP is Florida's public servant to poetry.

This year, YJP is celebrating our 10th Anniversary by publishing a major anthology of poetry, edited by acclaimed poets Silvia Curbelo and Gregory Byrd.  The anthology will showcase work by some of the best poets living and writing in Florida today—our YJP poets.  To debut the anthology in Fall 2015, we’ll have two fabulous launches—one in the Tampa Bay area and one at the Other Words Conference in St. Augustine. This project will be one of Florida’s biggest and most inclusive poetry celebrations ever!

In order to make the 10th Anniversary Anthology project a reality, we have set up a fundraising campaign through an online site called Indiegogo.

Our goal is to raise $4,500 in order to publish the anthology ($2000), pay honoraria to our poets ($2,000) and host the launch parties ($500). Donation levels range from $1--$1,000, so there is a level for everyone. Each supporter of $10 or more receives a perk from YJP, everything from an acknowledgement in the anthology, to copies of the book, VIP seating at the launches, and even a poetry Happy Hour with yours truly and other YJP board members.

Founded on an unswerving devotion to poetry, poets and audiences and a dedication to volunteerism, YellowJacket Press has established itself as the gold standard in commitment to the literary arts and chapbook publishing in Florida.  The 10th Anniversary Anthology will allow poets, audiences and fans from across the state to be part of preserving Florida’s poetic heritage of the early 21st century.

We’d love for you to join the celebration.  First, please share this email with your friends and on your social media sites. Encourage everyone to join the party, too.  Then, just click on the link below which will take you to Indiegogo where you can make a donation. We’re launching on Tampa Bay Give Day and ending on Bloomsday (well, we were supposed to, but Gianna counted wrong!), so you’ll have 43 days to donate. No donation is too small and every donation is deeply appreciated. And don't forget--you'll get some poecentric (!) perks and our eternal poetry-love.

Yours in poetry,

YellowJacket Press
